[10-28-24] One Person Died in Crash, I-25 Southbound Closed Down for Hours

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) –

Update at 5:49 p.m.: Colorado Springs Police sharing more details about the crash. It was a two-vehicle crash between a car and a heavy equipment truck. Three people were involved in the crash. One person died, and another is in stable condition at a local hospital. CSPD added, “The heavy equipment truck did leak fuel that has been safely contained by our partners at CSFD (Colorado Springs Fire Department), there is no environmental impact.”

The crash happened just after 10 a.m.

Update at 4:28 p.m.: Colorado Springs Police announced that I-25 has now reopened.

UPDATE: Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) confirmed to KRDO13 that one person died on the scene of the crash. Another person was transported to the hospital. CSPD says a third person was involved, but at this time their condition is unknown.

CSPD says detectives are on the scene investigating the cause of the crash. They say the highway will be closed in the area for several hours.

Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) says a person has been rescued from the vehicle. They are now being transported to a local hospital.

Southbound I-25 is closed south of the Martin Luther King Jr Bypass to Circle Drive due to a traffic accident. All southbound traffic is being diverted to MLK. Please plan for slow speeds.

PREVIOUS: The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) is on the scene of a rollover traffic accident.

The department says there are “parties” trapped in a vehicle involved in the crash.

CSFD says a semi is also involved in the crash at I-25 and South Circle Dr.

I-25 Southbound is closed south of the Martin Luther King Jr Bypass to Circle Dr. due to the traffic accident. Colorado Springs Police Department says all southbound traffic is being diverted to MLK since I-25 southbound is closed.

A total of 4,965 people died in large-truck crashes in 2020. The number of deaths decreased 1% from 2019 but is still up 31% since 2011. The majority of deaths in large-truck crashes are occupants of other vehicles (71%), followed by truck occupants (17%) and pedestrians and bicyclists (12%).

According to the National Safety Council, across the U.S., most fatal accidents occur on non-interstate roadways (73%) compared to interstate (23%). 63% occur in the day, with 37% at night.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration states there is a wide range of common causes of truck accidents in Denver. These include:

Faulty truck brakes – 29%
Driver speeding or driving too fast for the conditions – 23%
Driver unfamiliar with the route – 22%
Roadway problems or damage – 20%
Driver affected by over-the-counter drugs – 17%
Driver inadequate surveillance – 14%
Driver fatigue – 13%
Driver distraction – 10%
Driver under work pressure, such as time constraints – 10%
Illegal maneuvers – 9%
Driver inattention – 9%
Truck tire failure or problems – 6%
Tailgating – 5%
Driver jackknifing truck – 5%
Truck cargo shift – 4%
Driver illness – 3%
Intoxicated driver – 3%
