EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – A suspected intoxicated driver was arrested in Colorado Springs after hitting a construction worker and fleeing the scene overnight.
According to Colorado State Patrol, a flagger was standing on Highway 24 between Garrett Road and Falcon Highway when the suspect came barreling through the construction zone. The driver collided with the worker and sped off from the scene. Incredibly, State Patrol says the flagger wasn’t hurt.
Another worker at the construction site took off after the suspect driver, and according to State Patrol, tailed after him for more than a dozen miles before troopers apprehended him at Powers and Aeroplaza in Colorado Springs.
The driver has only been identified as a mid-20s man from the Springs. He is facing a laundry list of traffic charges, including DUI.
The victim is a 49-year-old man, also from Colorado Springs.
The Colorado Department of Transportation released the following statement to 11 News regarding the incident:
“Every year, CDOT undertakes hundreds of construction projects across the state, in addition to conducting highway maintenance to keep those traveling on our highways safe. Nighttime work is implemented in areas with high daytime traffic to lessen impacts on travelers. When traveling, it is imperative that drivers be alert and paying attention to the road — not changing the radio station or reading texts — especially at night. Within work zones, normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic lanes may be changed and people may be working on or near the road. Slow down, allow space between your vehicle and others, watch of flaggers and other workers within the work zone. Work zones aren’t there to inconvenience you. Work zone crew members are working to improve the road and make your future drive better.”
