COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A deadly crash is under investigation in eastern Colorado Springs.
Around 9 p.m. Tuesday, the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to Marsheffel and Drennan for a three-car crash.
Responding officers say two cars crashed head-on. Two people in one vehicle died on scene, while the driver of the second vehicle had to be rescued by firefighters. That person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
A third vehicle was involved, but officers are still unsure how. Two people in that third vehicle were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
“This one is going to be more complex than others to try to piece together. But our Major Crash team, they certainly have the expertise and the knowledge. They’re going to be out here for a good amount of time overnight gathering data, any skid marks or anything left on the road,” said Ira Cronin with the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Although the direction of travel and other factors are still being investigated, speed is believed to have been involved in this crash.
“Unclear at this point if alcohol or any other impairment may have been a factor. That’s still something that we will hope to discover,” said Cronin.
CSPD announced the area reopened around 3:30 a.m. after being closed for several hours.
“Out here is mostly a north-south thorough fare. People will be inconvenienced. They will have to turn around and there is no shortcuts, so you either got to go back around the airport, or out further out to Falcon and down around,” said Cronin.
The victims in this crash have not yet been identified. Police have not released if any arrests will be made. We will update this article as we learn more.
“If there were any witnesses to this accident that haven’t spoken to Colorado Springs Police, we would ask they call the non-emergency number and share any information they may have had,” said Cronin.
